Planta perenne, leñosa en la base, de 0,20 a 1,50 m de altura.
Hojas: simples, verde-grisáceo con el limbo lobulado.
Flores: capítulos grandes agrupados en la extremidad de los tallos.
La gama de colores del crisantemo es muy amplia: blanco, crema, amarillo, varias tonalidades de rosa y lila, melocotón, burdeos y caoba oscuro.
